The first major casting announcement from Star Wars Episode VII has been announced and it’s an interesting choice for those hoping that someone like Benedict Cumberbatch or Michael Fassbender would be cast. While big names are being kicked around, Girls star Adam Driver has been cast as the main villain for J.J. Abrams’ upcoming revival of the series.
Sources tell Variety that while no deal is done yet, the “Girls” actor is close to signing on to play the villain in J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: Episode VII.” Exact details are unknown, but the character is said to be in the vein of iconic “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader.
It’s an interesting choice but not a particularly bad one. While he’s best known for his role on Girls, Driver has showed some chops not he show and in other projects like the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis. He may not be who fans wanted, but he’s far from a bad choice.
Something else that this signifies is that the cast of this film will be a lot smaller in scope than we may have been thinking. Driver isn’t an unknown, but he’s the main villain and he’s not a huge star. That could open the window for other lesser known actors to fill big roles and that might not end up being a bad road to travel.
