A new clip debuted by IGN from Star Wars Rebels season 3 shows Jedi padawan Ezra Bridger’s burgeoning dark side power.

Star Wars Rebels‘s main character, Jedi padawan Ezra Bridger, just got a whole lot darker.

Throughout the first and second seasons of Star Wars Rebels, Ezra has undergone, and generally overcome tests of the dark side of the Force. At the end of season 2, however, we realized that was about to change when Ezra opened a Sith holocron, presumably to learn its secrets.

It’s in the third season of the series we will see the dark fruits of Ezra’s dance with the darkness. You can also see it in a new clip from the third season which debuted today on IGN.

With each new trailer and clip, Star Wars Rebels continues to surprise me. I did not expect Ezra to show this kind of power and control in the execution of the Force. His training as a Jedi has been rudimentary at best, overseen by a man who was still a Padawan when Palpatine unleashed Order 66 on the Jedi Order.

Nevertheless, the full trailer for Rebels season 3 shows Ezra’s skill in wielding a lightsaber has grown dramatically. And from the above clip, we realize the maturation he has experienced between the season finale of season 2 and season 3 goes deeper than mere skills with a lightsaber.

More from Dork Side of the Force

Is it maturation in a positive sense, though? Taking control of a stormtrooper’s hand on the controls of an AT-CT and making him shoot his comrades doesn’t seem like a Jedi-like thing to do. Yes, the act probably saved Ezra’s and his friends’ skins. But it’s this kind of borderline dark side use of the Force which caused the Jedi Order to become weak in the first place. It’s a manifestation of fear and anger, which as we all know lead to hatred and suffering.

How does Ezra know how control his Force powers so minutely? And why does he do it? The answer to the first question may by the Sith holocron he opened in the season 2 finale. In the trailer for Rebels season 3, Jedi master, Kanan Jarrus argues with Kanan about the debilitating effect the holocron is having on Ezra. Ezra, on the other hand, wants to use the dark side knowledge contained therein to defeat the Empire. Taking control of a stormtrooper and causing destruction with his mind may be Ezra’s first step toward putting his desires into action.

Throw Darth Maul, who is still trying to make Ezra his apprentice into the mix, and you can bet your bantha there’s a lot of trouble in store for the angsty Padawan this season.
