The new full-length trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is finally here! We break it down into screenshots below.
The new full-length trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story premiered during the Olympics on NBC tonight, and wow, was it worth the wait. We got a closer look at the main characters and their motivations, more shots of the Empire being utterly awesome, and, of course, a glimpse of a certain villain we’ve been waiting for ever since it was confirmed he would have a cameo in the standalone film.
In case you missed it: Darth Vader is in Rogue One. We don’t expect his screentime to be long, just long enough for him to say a few lines and maybe destroy a few rebels. Because if you put Vader in a film for longer than a few minutes, he’s going to take over the whole story, and I think Lucasfilm wants us to focus on the new characters Rogue One introduces.
What’s great about this new trailer is it gives us a healthy mix of the old and the new. The old manifests itself in things like stormtroopers, classic original trilogy vehicles, costumes, and weapons, and Darth Vader. The new is in the new characters, the new vehicles like the U-wing and the AT-ACT, the new planets, and the fresh aesthetic of a movie directed by a newcomer to the Star Wars universe.
Let’s analyze all of these elements with a screenshot breakdown.
First, we have a large city set up on a plateau, with Imperial ships rising from it. The planet shown here, and in several of the shots from the trailer, is likely Jedha, which has been described as a frozen desert (via Star Wars Databank).

The next handful of shots are from the same scene we first glimpsed in the first teaser trailer from last spring, just highlighting frames we haven’t seen before.
The officer below asks Jyn, “Can you be trusted without your shackles?”

Captain Cassian Andor removes Jyn’s “shackles,” and the young female rebel replies to the first officer, “Let’s get this over with, shall we?”

Then Mon Mothma proceeds to tell Jyn about the mission to steal the Death Star plans.

Next, we’re back at the base on Yavin IV. Andor tells Jyn he wants in on her mission. She agrees, and they are seen piloting a ship together (possibly the U-wing seen a frame before).

The next few shots are a smattering of different views, the first being what is likely Jyn and Andor’s ship flying through a canyon of towering rock formations at night.

Next is a nighttime shot of Baze Malgus lining up a shot.

Then there’s another shot of what looks like the U-wing flying across the planet where the Star Destroyer was hovering earlier.

Next, a shot of Chirrut Imwe, Baze’s friend, as he declares to the stormtroopers he’s about to face, “I fear nothing. All is as the Force wills it”

Next: 5. The Empire

Next, Jyn meets K-2SO, a former Imperial security droid who is now Andor’s friend and protector.

K-2SO then gives the Rogue One crew some encouragement by telling them they have about a 96% chance of failure. Andor follows this up with, “He means well.” Bodhi Rook, the technician on the crew, looks bewildered.

The next shot is one of untold destruction. It looks like the Death Star laser may be undergoing some preliminary testing.

The last shot we see of the new Rogue One trailer is the back of a familiar and sinister figure. The unmistakable sound of his breathing marks the last second of footage.
And that’s our screenshot breakdown of the first full length trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. What did you think of it? Are you even more excited for the film? We certainly are! So many gorgeous shots!
