Entertainment Weekly reveals descriptions of deleted scenes from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and boy are we in for a treat!
Our friends at Entertainment Weekly dropped a major bomb on us, revealing descriptions and full details on deleted scenes for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. There has been so much new information released recently that has added to The Last Jedi experience in significant ways! These deleted scenes, though sadly cut from the final version of the film, add a lot to the lore and grant us deeper insight into some beloved characters in the film. Read on for a preview of five of the most revealing deleted scenes.
BB8 Reveals Rey’s Goodbye
In one of the deleted scenes, we see a conflicted Finn trying to decide whether he should abandon the Resistance to save Rey or stay and fight. When BB8 finds him, Finn is watching a hologram of Rey saying an emotional goodbye to an unconscious Finn.
The two friends don’t spend a whole lot of time together in The Last Jedi, so according to Johnson the point of this scene was to remind the audience of the strong bond that Finn and Rey share. Their friendship is such a powerful driving force in this trilogy and this was meant to be a way to keep that connection vibrant.
Johnson said he was disappointed to have to cut this scene for the sake of pace, especially because Boyega delivered a funny line. He chides BB8 for filming this private moment between him and Rey, saying: “That’s kind of creepy you recorded that.” Though we may agree that it was invasive of BB8, I think we’re all glad we get a snippet of the parting words between Rey and Finn.

Rey and the Raiders of the Caretaker Village
In this scene, Luke and Rey are in the temple on Ach-To. Having concluded their training, Rey looks down and sees lights approaching on the ocean. Luke explains to her that this is a warring tribe that has come to ransack the Caretakers’ village. Rey, who is always sticking up for others, is immediately desirous of action.
However, Luke argues that if they intervene, the warring tribe will just come back later with more soldiers and they will be much angrier in the wake of their defeat. He explains to her that a Jedi would not get involved for fear of making the situation worse. He then asks her whether she’s still sure she wants to be a Jedi.
Furious with his answer, Rey ignites the saber and heads down to defend the village.
This scene is so interesting because it highlights more clearly the reasons for the break between Luke and Rey.
Johnson describes this moment as Rey’s breaking point. She realizes she can’t fully trust Luke and this sets her up to be more susceptible to a connection between her and Kylo. In a sense, they both feel betrayed by Luke, which intensifies the comradery they feel.

Luke in Mourning
I wish that they had decided to keep this scene in The Last Jedi because it is so gut-wrenchingly glorious! The scene gives us a glimpse of the grief Luke feels after hearing that his oldest friend, Han Solo, has died. After hearing the news, Luke goes into his hut alone and in this solitude, we see him shed tears for his friend.
Adding to the emotional depth of the scene, the film cuts away to Leia sitting in a similar position aboard the Resistance ship grieving the loss of her husband. This presents a beautiful parallel between the two siblings while momentarily reuniting the big three of the original Star Wars trilogy in a moment of grief shared by the audience.
The scene was deleted for the sake of pacing, but Johnson lamented its loss, citing Hamill’s incredible performance!

The Supremacy Infiltration
This scene extends Finn and Rose’s mission aboard the Supremacy (Supreme Leader Snoke’s star destroyer) in the attempt to shut down the device the First Order is using to track the Resistance through hyperspace.

After they’ve stolen some First Order Uniforms, Finn and Rose run into a Storm Trooper who is convinced that he knows Finn from somewhere. Once he recognizes Finn as FN-2187 instead of ratting Finn out the Stormtrooper, much to Finn’s surprise congratulates him on being promoted to officer.
Why is this scene so interesting? Well, it reveals that the details of Finn’s defection were never leaked. The First Order covered up the fact that Finn’s involvement in the Starkiller base catastrophe because it would have been a gargantuan embarrassment to them.
Rian Johnson said that the exchange and many of the things that happen on the star destroyer were hilarious and he was sad to see the scene go. However, he decided that it would have thrown off the pacing of that scene if they had kept it in the film.

A Different Phasma Showdown
Phasma is such a bad ass, and I wish they had done more with her in the film. Alas, all we got was a quick but awesome battle scene between her and Finn.
However, a deleted scene from The Last Jedi gives us an alternate showdown between the two.
Though the scene ends the same way (with Phasma’s death), there is a little extra depth added. Instead of Finn vanquishing her right off the bat, Phasma actually disarms Finn. At that moment, Finn is surrounded by Phasma and little platoon of Stormtroopers.
While he fears his own end, Finn reveals Phasma’s cowardice as she revealed the shield codes to Starkiller base in The Force Awakens.
