Last week, a former hobbit joined the Star Wars: Episode IX cast. Now, J.J. Abrams has recruited a veteran Doctor.

Star Wars: Episode IX casting news just keeps coming. Late last week, Lucasfilm announced former Lord of the Rings actor Dominic Monaghan had joined the ever-growing list of characters.

Now, another well-known sci-fi veteran will reportedly join him.

Matt Smith will join the cast as production continues through early next year, Variety reported.

The actor is best known for playing The Eleventh Doctor on BBC’s popular series Doctor Who.

More from Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker

Smith also recently appeared in the first two seasons of Netflix’s The Crown. He played Queen Elizabeth II’s young husband, Prince Philip.

He will join familiar faces such as Keri Russell, Mark Hamill, Richard E. Grant, Billy Dee Williams, and Carrie Fisher (sort of).

Actors reprising their roles from the former two trilogy films include Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, and John Boyega.

It’s unclear at this time which character Smith will portray in the third episode of the sequel trilogy. But sources claim it is a “key role.”

Whoever — or whatever — it is, we’ve likely heard of him before, at least by name. With the several new cast members joining Star Wars: Episode IX, there are sure to be more surprises coming our way.

Richard E. Grant won’t be playing Thrawn. But could Smith take on the challenge?

Who do you think the Doctor Who alum will play in the next Star Wars movie?

Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled to come out in December 2019.
