Love Has Blinded You?

This moment of the film comes fairly early on. Anakin has just successfully crash-landed Dooku’s cruiser and has rescued Chancellor Palpatine from the clutches of the Separatists. It’s his first night back after being out fighting in the Clone Wars for months. Naturally, he crashes at his baby mama’s apartment for a romantic and relaxing evening.

The moment in question occurs when Anakin is creepily watching Padmé brush her hair out on the balcony as she explains to him how she wants to have the baby on Naboo, and build a nursery by the gardens.

Anakin then exclaims how beautiful she is. Padmé retorts that its because she’s so in love. A very awkward contest of who loves the other more ensues, and then Padmé questions that love has blinded him. Just writing about this scene makes my insides squirm.

It’s a very juvenile declaration of love that seems like a rough draft version that was never gone back over and polished up to sound a little more grown-up.

For God’s sake, even saying she is the size of a Hutt, and then Anakin replying that she’s the best looking Hutt he’s ever seen would’ve been better. Instead, we are stuck with this extremely tough to watch exchange that completely takes us out of a movie, that until that point, had gotten off to a great start.
