The Mandalorian season 2 is officially here, and as any fan would agree, it’s about time! Chapter 9 of the story of Mando and The Child brought tons of action, new characters, and of course, new threats. Isn’t it still so surprising how powerful something as tiny as Baby Yoda is?

While we wait for the next episode to arrive next week (sadly the whole season has not dropped at once), you might be wondering how long The Mandalorian will go on for. As the show takes place about five years after Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and at least 25 years before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there’s a lot that could be potentially explored with the new series.

Is The Mandalorian season 3 happening?

The good news is that yes, The Mandalorian will continue for a third season. In fact, the next installment is already in the works. Sources for Variety revealed back in the spring that showrunner Jon Favreau had been “writing season 3 for a while.” Additionally, the design department reportedly began working on season 3 in April.

More recently, Favreau gave an update on filming, telling Variety earlier this month that they’re on track to begin production by the end of this year. This, of course, is subject to change because of COVID-19 safety concerns and regulations.

Favreau does in fact seem confident they’ll be able to start filming as planned, however, explaining:

"We’re in very small situations and oftentimes we have a lot of characters in masks. And we also have a lot of digital work that augments things. So we’re a show that’s probably well-equipped to be flexible based on the protocols that are emerging surrounding work restarting."

Is The Mandalorian season 4 happening?

As of right now, a fourth season has not been confirmed. However, star Giancarlo Esposito did tease the possibility, telling People in September:

"We’re living in a universe that is huge and there’s so much to explore … So I think this show is going to lay the ground work for the depth and breath that’s gonna come in season 3 and season 4, where you’re really gonna start to get answers."

It’s safe to assume the Star Wars series will go on for at least four seasons, and perhaps even more. With the success the show has seen so far, plus all of the merchandise opportunity for Disney, it would be a no-brainer to keep it going for a few more years.
