The Mandalorians have become one of Star Wars’ most popular groups since the introduction of Boba Fett in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Since then, the Mandalorians’ appearances have expanded into comics, video games, and animated series’, as well as live-action series like The Mandalorian on Disney +.
This article contains a list of some of the most well-known Mandalorians from the Expanded Universe/Legends, specifically, those from the Old Republic era. Among these entries is a chronological listing of all of the Mand’alors, the sole ruler of the Mandalorians. Lastly, we have included a couple of entries of the most prominent Mandalorians to have served under these rulers.
10 legendary Mandalorians from the Old Republic

1. TE SOL’YC MAND’ALOR (Mandalore the First)
Group Affiliation(s): Crusaders
Height: 6′ 6″ (2 meters)
Weight: 209 lbs (95 kilograms)
Species: Taung
Gender: Male
Eye Color: Yellow
Hair Color: None
Skin Color: Grey
Homeworld: Roon
Occupation: Conqueror/Raider, Mand’alor
First Appearance: Star Wars Insider # 80 “History of the Mandalorians”
Character History:
Te Sol’yc Mand’alor (Mandalore the First) was the original leader of the Mandalorian people who led them to the planet that would later bear his name. Mandalore the First conquered the planet’s apex predator, the mythosaurs, and carved a helmet from the sternum of one of the fallen beasts. This helmet called the kyr’ bes, or “Mythosaur skull” became a symbol of power that the Mandalorians used to recognize the greatest among them.
Powers/Skills: Mandalore the First was an expert hunter, had superior leadership skills, and possessed heightened senses, super strength, super speed, and durability due to his species natural advantages.
Armor/Weapon(s): His nigh-invulnerable armor was organic in appearance, and his weapon of choice was a mythosaur axe, a fan-bladed war axe carved from a mythosaur’s bones — just like the kyr’bes.
Mandalorian Origins: The Mandalorian culture was partly inspired by Germanic Tribes (Goths, Vandals, and Vikings) as well as the famous Greek warriors, the Spartans.

2. TE KANDOSII MAND’ALOR (Mandalore the Indomitable)
Group Affiliation(s): Crusaders, Brotherhood of the Sith
Species: Taung
Gender: Male
Occupation: World Conqueror, Mand’alor, general
First Appearance: Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi — The Sith War # 1 — Edge of the Whirlwind
Character History:
An early successor to the mantle of Mand’alor, this new leader was led by a vision on the planet Shogun to abandon his religion that worshiped a trinity of gods in favor of worshiping war itself. Essentially, Mandalore the Indomitable’s epiphany made both the act of war and those who waged it divine. Thus, his Crusaders were moved by a religious fervor to raid other planets and overwhelm their predominant species, just as they had with the mythosaurs of Mandalore.
The Indomitable and his Crusaders later clashed with a Sith lord named Ulic Qel-Droma after the Mand’alor came to claim the Sith’s empire. The Mand’alor challenged the Sith Lord to a duel using only mythosaur axes but was defeated by the other’s superior fighting skills. Instead of slaying the defeated Mandalore as he requested, the Sith chose to spare his opponent’s life. The Indomitable in turn swore fealty to his new ally and became the Sith’s general and adviser.
This new alliance between the Brotherhood of the Sith and the Crusaders led to what became known as the Great Sith Wars. The Indomitable led many skirmishes against the Jedi and Old Republic, including a battle on Coruscant — the Taung species’ original homeworld that they had been exiled from over a millennia ago. Although the odds were in their favor, the battle on Coruscant would ultimately lead to the capture of the Sith’s leader and a temporary power grab by his mistress, Aleema Keto. The Indomitable, though, sensed treachery from his new commander and sought help from another Sith named Exar Kun. The two of them then mounted a successful rescue mission against the Jedi who were holding Qel-Droma prisoner.
Eventually, the Indomitable’s reign as Mand’alor would come to a gruesome end following the Battle of Onderon, the final battle of the Mandalorian Crusades. While retreating from the Republic’s reinforcements the Indomitable’s Basilisk War Droid was shot down over the Onderon moon, Dxun. Despite surviving the crash, his good fortune soon turned ill, after he was surrounded by a pack of the moon’s deadliest predators who overwhelmed and devoured the leader of the Mandalorians.
Powers/Skills: Mandalore the Indomitable was an expert hand-to-hand combatant, possessed a high-level of resilience, strong tactile skills, and naturally heightened physical abilities/senses inherent in his species. He also wore a suit of armor that gave him other enhanced abilities including near invulnerability, projectiles, energy blasts, force fields, etc.
Weapon(s): Although trained in the use of a multitude of weapons and firearms, his preferred weapon of choice was the mythosaur axe, which he used to challenge the Sith Lord, Ulic Quel Droma for control of his Empire.
Desperate Measures: The Basilisk War Droids that the Crusaders rode were created by an intelligent reptilian species called the Basilisks who had devolved into mindless beasts after poisoning their planet in a last desperate effort to drive away their conquerors.

3. TE ANI’LA MAND’ALOR (Mandalore the Ultimate)
Group Affiliation(s): Neo-Crusaders
Species: Taung
Gender: Male
Occupation: World Conqueror, Mand’alor
First Appearance: Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi — The Sith War # 6 — Dark Lord
Character History:
Rather than being chosen by his people, this Mand’alor took up the mantle after discovering the ceremonial helmet from the leftover remains of its previous owner, Mandalore the Indomitable. Like his predecessor, Mandalore the Ultimate was led by a vision on the planet Shogun to steer his people into a new direction. Under his leadership, the Mandalorians began to diversify their ranks with a multitude of different species, with humans making up the predominant recruits.
Unfortunately, Mandalore the Ultimate would be manipulated by the Dark Side of the Force to “see” a false premonition that led to the re-militarization of the Mandalorians into a more uniform group called the Neo-Crusaders. This new vision instigated the infamous ‘Mandalorian Wars’ that was a decade in the making.
Mandalore the Ultimate and his Neo-Crusaders atrocities on planets such as Cathar and Jebble attracted the attention of the Jedi, particularly a group led by an amnesiac Jedi named Revan. This Jedi would later kill Mandalore the Ultimate in a duel on the Sith planet, Malachor V. The Ultimate’s death marked the last time that a member of the Taung species would lead the Mandalorians.
Powers/Skills: Mandalore the Indomitable possessed superior charisma/leadership skills, was an expert in both unarmed and weapons combat, and had the naturally heightened physical abilities/senses of his species. He also had enhanced powers such as electricity control, dark-Force manipulation, and expelling blast-force energy, plus other abilities gained from the suit he wore.
What Goes Around… : The Taung were driven to near extinction following the Battle of Malachor V, thus leaving behind the Mandalorian culture that would come to be dominated by humans. Some could see this as poetic justice after the Mandalorians had exterminated so many other species in their war of conquest.

4. TE TAYLIR MAND’ALOR (Mandalore the Preserver)
Group Affiliation(s): Formerly the Neo-Crusaders, ally to the Republic, and Jedi
Species: Human, Light-skinned
Gender: Male
Eye Color: Blue-gray
Hair Color: Dark Brown
Occupation: Soldier/Mercenary, Bounty Hunter, Mand’alor
First Appearance: Knights of the Old Republic the PC game
Character History:
Revan, the Jedi who had defeated the previous Mand’alor and became the rightful successor to the mantle, instead passed the kyr’bes to an old ally of his named Canderous Ordo. This Mand’alor held a significant role in Mandalorian history as he was both the first human — and therefore the first non-Taung — to wear the kyr’bes.
As Mandalore the Preserver he also helped to reunite many of his people who had been scattered across the galaxy following the end of the Mandalorian Wars. The Preserver was also the first Mand’alor to join forces with the Republic, aiding them against the Sith Triumvirate.
Powers/Skills: Mandalore the Preserver possessed superior hand-to-hand and marksmanship skills honed through his bounty hunting background, along with heightened skills in diplomacy.
The end of a tradition: Mandalore the Preserver was the last of the Mand’alor to wear the kyr’bes, the traditional symbol of power among his people.
5. MANDALORE THE LESSER
Group Affiliation(s): Sith Empire
Height: 6′ 6″ (2 meters)
Weight: 285 lbs (129 kilograms)
Species: Human, Tan-skinned
Gender: Male
Eye Color: Brown
Hair Color: Auburn
Homeworld: Geonosis
Occupation: Former Gladiator, Mand’alor
First Appearance: Star Wars: The Old Republic — Timeline 3: The Return of the Mandalorians (PC game)
Character History:
This Mand’alor is one of the few of his kind to be held in low esteem, hence his title. Prior to becoming Mand’alor, he was a Geonosian gladiator whose victories were being secretly fixed by the Sith Empire. The reason for their interference was because they sought to use him as their personal pawn in bringing forth more support from the Mandalorians, whom they wished to use to end their stalemate against the Republic forces.
Following his ascension to Mand’alor, he used his authority to unite his people once again in service of the Sith. His alliance with the Sith proved useful when he held a blockade over an important trade route called the Hydian Way.
Seeking to reinvigorate his fellow Mandalorians, as well as booster support for himself, this Mand’alor called for the revival of an ancient competition called the Great Hunt. Unfortunately, he was deposed by the Grand Champion of this competition — a bounty hunter named Artus Lok — who shot him dead after challenging him for the title of Mand’alor. In the aftermath of this victory, the truth of how the previous Mand’alor ascended to power came to light and his title was demoted to that of the Lesser.
Powers/Skills: Mandalore the Lesser was an above-average hand-to-hand combatant from his many years spent inside the gladiatorial arenas of Geonosis. Besides his combat skills, he also had the agility, speed, and stamina of a highly-active athlete.
It ends where it began: The arena of Geonosis that the Lesser fought in was possibly the same one that would be used to initiate the opening battles of the Clone Wars millennia later.

6. MANDALORE THE VINDICATED
Group Affiliation(s): Clan Lok, The Sith Empire
Height: 6′ 2″ (1.83 meters)
Weight: 250 lbs (113 kilograms)
Species: Human, Dark-skinned
Gender: Male
Eye Color: Brown
Hair Color: Black, Shaved bald
Occupation: Bounty Hunter, Mand’alor
First Appearance: Star Wars: The Old Republic — Timeline 4: The Empire Changes Strategy (PC game)
Character History:
The former bounty hunter named, Artus Lok, became the next Mand’alor known as Mandalore the Vindicated. He was a dark-skinned human male that wore a bulky, gold and red armor with a dorsal fin-crested helmet.
Mandalore the Vindicated sought to consolidate the Mandalorian clans but came against some resistance from a former friend of his named Jicoln Cadera who wanted the Mandalorians to ally with the Republic instead of the Sith Empire.
Legends tell that during this time period the galaxies major powers entered into a Galactic Cold War. However, this was abruptly interrupted by the invasion of a new threat called the Eternal Empire, led by a former Sith emperor named Zakuul. This rival faction sought sole dominance over all the others and therefore was a shared foe that Republic, Sith, and Mandalorian forces united against.
Unfortunately, Mandalore the Vindicated would be one of the casualties of this new threat after his planet was invaded by the Eternal Empire’s droid army of Skytroopers.
Powers/Skills: Mandalore the Vindicated was a highly-trained martial artist, marksman, and tracker gained from his previous life as a bounty hunter. He also had above normal strength, durability, and stamina on par with someone who engaged in regular strenuous activity. Besides his physical prowess, he was also skilled in diplomacy.
A Rare Honor: Mandalore the Vindicated is the only known human of his race to ascend to the position of Mand’alor. This is unique, considering that most Mandalorians of his species have been of the lighter-skinned races. The only other known dark-skinned Mandalorian was Rohlan Dyre.

7. TE GRA’ TUA MAND’ ALOR (Mandalore the Avenger)
Group Affiliation(s): Clan Vizla, Sith Empire (Resurgent), the Eternal Alliance
Ht: 5’ 11” (1.52 meters)
Wt: 135 lbs (61 kilograms)
Species: Human, Fair-skinned
Gender: Female
Eye Color: Hazel
Hair Color: Red
Occupation: Assassin, Bounty Hunter, Mand’alor
First Appearance: Star Wars: The Old Republic: Deceived
Character History:
The first female to hold the mantle of Mand’alor was a retired Mandalorian bounty hunter/assassin named Shae Vizla. At first, she was reluctant to assume command as Mand’alor because she had lost interest in fighting wars while in service to the Sith Empire. Nevertheless, she did not shun her duty to her people. As Mandalore the Avenger, Vizla was able to rally many clans to her cause and fight back against the Eternal Empire.
Together with her right-hand man, Torian Cadera, she mounted several successful attatcks against the Eternal Empire including a retaliatory strike on one of their droid factories on the planet Darvannis. The Avengers attack on this factory was further aided by the one called The Outlander.
The latter impressed the Avenger so much that she decided to pledge the Mandalorians to the side of the Alliance, combining their forces together to repel their common foe. The Avenger later led her people at the Siege of Voss in what became one of the decisive battles in the revolt against the Eternal Empire.
Powers/Skills: A deadly efficient bounty hunter/assassin with combat and marksmanship skills to rival those of Boba Fett. She was also adept at using her jetpack for sustained flight and maneuverability during combat.
Weapons: Her armor’s gauntlets housed two miniature flamethrowers and rocket launchers that fired projectiles. Vizla also carried a blaster that fired red bolts of plasma.
VIZ-la or VIZ-sla? : Although their surnames are similar, Shae Vizla is not of the same clan as Tarre Vizsla— the Mandalorian-Jedi — or Pre Vizsla who later led the infamous Death Watch.
She’s hot: Shae Vizla was given the nickname “Torch”, presumably because she had a nasty habit of disintegrating/incinerating her foes.

8. TE SOL’US MAND’ALOR (Mandalore the Uniter)
Group Affiliation(s): Clan Awaud
Species: Human, Light-skinned
Gender: Male
Occupation: Former Bounty Hunter, Mand’alor
First Appearance: Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare by Jason Fry (first mentioned),
Star Wars: The Bounty Hunter’s Code by Daniel Wallace (first shown)
Character History:
Aga Awaud, a Mandalorian mercenary, was among the greatest of his people to become Mand’alor. His journey to becoming Mand’alor came after he was forced to take action against the ravages of disease and predatory raids that had left his homeworld in shambles. His exasperation led to the beginning of a movement known as the Return, wherein Mandalorians from all corners of the galaxy were once again united together on their ancestral home.
This reuniting of a common culture led to not just a strengthening of bonds between the Mando’ade but the beginning of an unprecedented growth in prosperity. For his contribution to their resurgence, Awaud became known to his people as Mandalore the Uniter
Powers/Skills: He was skilled in the arts of bounty hunting having served in that profession. As such, he was a capable fighter and skilled at using a variety of weapons including ranged, side-arms, and melee. He also wore armor that came equipped with a variety of weapons for handling the threats he might encounter.
His greatest power/skill may have been his charismatic personality and political prowess which helped him to unite his people from all across the galaxy to a common cause.
The Legacy: The Shocktrooper armor worn by Mandalore the Uniter was so popular that it became the template used by countless generations of Mandalorians afterwards, including the Super Commandos, Jango Fett, and Din Djarin/Mando.

9. CASSUS FETT
Group Affiliation(s): Clan Fett, Neo-Crusaders
Height: 6’ (1.8 meters)
Weight: 195 lbs (88 kilograms)
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Rivals: Demagol and Pulsipher
Occupation: Aide-de-camp/Confidential assistant to Mandalore the Ultimate, general
First Appearance: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic # 8 — Flashpoint, Part 2
Character History:
The ancestor of Jango and Boba Fett was a key player during the infamous Mandalorian Wars, circa 3976 BBY. Fett was the aide-de-camp to Mandalore the Ultimate and was responsible for taking the Mandalorians from a barbaric tribe of world conquerors to a more unified and fine-tuned war machine. To accomplish this, Fett took inspiration from a Mandalorian cult called the Neo-Crusaders that utilized a singular style of armor, a hierarchical system of command, as well a labor division.
Fett expanded on this cults system by color-coding the armors so as to make it easier to distinguish rank. Blue was the color worn by the lowest ranks, followed by red, and then gold for those of the highest rank like himself. Fett also changed the Mandalorians from mere conquerors of worlds, to assimilating those whom they defeated into their culture. By implementing these changes, Fett helped to turn the Mandalorians into an organization that could rival the Republic.
Cassus Fett reputation was much like that of Darth Vader during his time. Besides his tactical mind, he was also known for his ruthlessness against the enemy. Fett’s most atrocious act committed during the Mandalorian Wars was his attack on the planet Cathar and its people of the same name. His reason for nearly exterminating this entire species was vindictive rather than justified since he wanted to make an example of them for past defeats against his people.
Not everyone agreed with Fett, as was evident from a lone Mandalorian that stood in defense of the Cathar people and begged his superior to show mercy. Rather than listen to one of his own, Fett chose instead to execute this courageous, but defiant Mandalorian along with the enemy. Years later this dark moment in galactic history would be discovered during an investigation by the Jedi known as Revan who took the mask of this Mandalorian and wore it their honor.
Fett also clashed with another rival of his named Pulsipher who had discovered a Sith artifact on the planet, Taris. This artifact — called the Muur Talisman — would later unleash a deadly plague on the nearby moon, Jebble, that transformed both Mandalorians and civilians on the planet into demonic creatures called the Rakghouls.
Zayne Carrick, a former Jedi padawan, who had witnessed these transformations, warned the incoming Mandalorian of this threat in an attempt to prevent its spread. After some hesitation, Fett ultimately heeded the Jedi’s warning and bombarded the planet’s surface from above with orbital nuclear missiles that wiped out all life on the surface including both the Rakghouls and his rival, Pulsipher, who commanded them.
Cassus Fett’s fate was unknown, but he was presumed to have died sometime during, or after the Battle of Malachor V, where the superweapon called the Mass Shadow Generator eradicated countless lives on both opposing sides. Fett’s legacy would live on through his clan, which ultimately brought forth two of the greatest bounty hunters to roam the galaxy, Jango and Boba Fett.
Powers/Skills: Cassus Fett was a master tactician who excelled at planning and executing his military strategies to maximum effect. He spoke several languages, including his native Mando’a, and High Galactic. He was also a formidable warrior, adept at both hand-to-hand combat and weapons fighting.
Weapon(s): Fett’s weapon of choice was a heavy blaster pistol. He was also known to lead his troops from atop a customized Basilisk War Droid. Fett’s preferred weapon when attacking mass populations was the fission weapons used on the Mandalorian Kandosii-type warships.
Wait, how you’d get that?: A suit of Cassus Fett’s armor was acquired by a merchant named Adum Larp of Dantooine and his heavy blaster pistol would likewise come into the possession of B’ree, a Czerka Corporation merchant on Korriban. Both of these could be purchased by players of the Knights of the Old Republic PC game.

10. DEMAGOL
Real Name: Antos Wyrick
Nickname(s): The Mad Scientist of Mandalore, The Flesh Carver
Group Affiliation(s): The Mandalorians
Height: 6′ 3″ (1.83 meters)
Weight: 140 lbs (63 kilograms)
Species: Zeltron, red skinned
Gender: Male
Eye Color: Dark
Hair Color: Gray, Shaved bald
Occupation: Scientist and Unethical Surgeon
Homeworld: Zeltros
First Appearance: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic # 8 — Flashpoint, Part 2
Character History:
Once a former slave under the Iskalloni on the planet Iskadrel, Antos Wyrick was one of many to be freed following the invasion of their planet by Mandalore the Indomitable. After slaughtering their slavers, Wyrick would later join up with the Mandalorians where he served them as a scientist.
Wyrick turned out to be no better than his former slavers though, as his unethical scientific research focused on his attempts to create an army of Force-sensitive “Mandalorian Knights,” utilizing the DNA of a Jedi named Arca Jeth. Wyrick was so desperate to attain results that he stooped to selling his own daughter, Chantique, to a slave trading organization called The Crucible. Afterwards, he would be forced to abandon his fake school on Osadia and rejoin the Mandalorian’s under the new alias, Doctor Demagol, a.k.a. The Mad Scientist of Mandalore.
Under his new alias, Demagol would continue his never-ceasing experiments to negate and/or replicate Force-powers for his Mandalorian Knights by dissecting captured Jedi on an asteroid base known as Flashpoint Station. A former Jedi padawan named Zayne Carrick working alongside his allies, the Mandalorian deserter, Rohlan Dyre, and Jarael would later destroy this lab. However, during the confusion of the surrounding battle Demagol found a way to incapacitate Dyre and masquerade as him for several months.
Thankfully, Demagol’s ruse would be uncovered and he would be killed fighting against his daughter. Despite his many efforts, Demagol ultimately failed to bring about his Mandalorian Knights. Incidentally, a few centuries later an actual Force-sensitive Mandalorian named Tarre Vizsla would be born.
Powers/Skills: Demagol was an extremely talented surgeon (albeit a malpractitioner), adept at using a blaster/other weapons, and he was a well-trained martial artist from being taught personally by Mandalore the Indomitable. Demagol was also Force-sensitive but lacked any formal training to teach him how to do much beyond telekinesis.
Weapons: His deadliest weapons were his intellect and his equally deadly skills with a surgical tool.
Look, mother, I’m in the dictionary: Demagol’s unethical experiments gave rise to a Mando’a word, Demagolka, which translates into either, “a real-life monster“, “someone who commits atrocities”, or “a war criminal”. It might also be translated into “a quack.”
This concludes the listing of the Legends of Mandalore. Next, we will continue this list with 20 of the Star Wars canon most prominent Mandalorians, including Boba Fett and Din Djarin from The Mandalorian Disney + series.
