Last night’s Game Awards kicked off with something Star Wars fans did not see coming: a cinematic reveal trailer for a brand-new Star Wars video game by Lucasfilm Games and Quantic Dream – Star Wars: Eclipse.

That’s not the most surprising thing about the new game announcement, however. What took the community by surprise wasn’t the reveal of a new Star Wars game, but instead that the game would be set during The High Republic era.

According to StarWars.com and the game’s official press release, Star Wars: Eclipse is an action-adventure game that will.utilize “deeply branching narratives and will go beyond their already established acclaim.Player’s choices will be at the heart of the experience, as every decision can have a dramatic impact on the course of the story.”

This blend of action-packed gameplay and complex narrative design is meant to make players feel like their choices have an actual impact on the outcome of the story the game is telling. In many games of this kind, the choices players make can have world-saving and universe-altering consequences, which instantly makes gamers feel more immersed in the experience.

It’s unclear at this time whether or not the game will feature characters from the books and comics set in The High Republic, or if it will even take place during the same time period as these stories.

The game is still in early development, so a release date and more details have yet to be announced. A cinematic trailer speaks to the game’s grand plans, but at this stage, there’s still a lot of work to be done.

Star Wars: Eclipse is the first Star Wars game to be developed under the Lucasfilm Games name. While Quantic Dream will develop and produce the project, Lucasfilm Games will handle distribution as Electronic Arts has done for Star Wars games in recent years.
