Not even 24 hours after Star Wars dropped a new episode of a TV series, it shamelessly announced the release date of the next one. Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi now has an official premiere date.

The limited original series, which is expected to be a six-episode installment released over six consecutive weeks, will officially debut this May.

Ewan McGregor and Kathleen Kennedy revealing that Obi-Wan would return to Star Wars — with Ewan returning to the role — remains one of the most memorable moments in Star Wars history. It would be several years before we knew exactly when to expect to see him again.

Last week, rumors began to circulate that Obi-Wan Kenobi would release in May. The same day The Book of Boba Fett released its final episode (for now), Lucasfilm pushed out the announcement that the next Star Wars Disney+ series would drop on May 25, the day before Star Wars Celebration 2022 is set to begin.

May 25 seems like a random choice for release until you realize the significance of that date to the history of a galaxy far, far away. Many consider May 25 “Star Wars day” because A New Hope originally premiered on May 25, 1977. This new release will coincide with the franchise’s official 45th anniversary.

The series takes place 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and is expected to include the appearances of Darth Vader, Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, and more unnamed characters. Originally, fans assumed the entire series would take place on Tatooine, but many are speculating we will visit other locations either in flashbacks or in real (Star Wars) time.

Obi-Wan Kenobi stars Ewan McGregor with appearances by Hayden Christensen and Kumail Nanjiani and is directed by Deborah Chow, who previously directed an episode of The Mandalorian. The series is set to premiere May 25, 2022 exclusively on Disney+.
