Ever since it was officially announced that Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen would be reuniting in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series, Star Wars fans have been ravenous for more about their behind-the-scenes reconnection. We do know that both McGregor and Christensen watched a lot of Star Wars to prepare for their roles. Anakin Skywalker himself went on an even deeper dive than his co-star, watching both animated series The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels.

He says he did it to prepare for his role as Darth Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi, but let’s be honest: He probably enjoyed most of it, especially as a dad IRL. Speaking with EW, he explained why he felt it was important to explore the animated Star Wars series.

“I went back and rewatched all the films,” Christensen told EW. “And I also got into the animated shows, The Clone Wars and Rebels…. They did a lot with these characters in those shows  And they did further explore the relationship.”

Christensen commented that he’s fascinated by how much the Star Wars universe has grown since he starred in the final two prequel films in the early 2000s.

“There was interesting stuff there to learn about. It was great fun getting to go back and re-immerse yourself in this world that just continues to grow and become more and more vast.”

Okay, so he’s only seen Rebels probably once at this point. But he knows about Thrawn. And he understands that Ezra Bridger has now been missing for years and it’s getting worrisome. So at least Rebels fans definitely aren’t alone in their suffering.

Obi-Wan Kenobi stars Ewan McGregor with appearances by Hayden Christensen and Kumail Nanjiani and is directed by Deborah Chow, who previously directed an episode of The Mandalorian. The series is set to premiere May 27, 2022 exclusively on Disney+.
