The High Republic began not so long ago in a galaxy not so far away, and in 2022, we’re already entering Phase II of the highly successful Lucasfilm Publishing initiative. Path of Deceit, on shelves October 4, is the beginning of a new era within a new era of Star Wars storytelling.

One fun thing about Phase II of The High Republic is that you don’t have to have read everything in Phase I to jump into this new phase. This is because Phase II takes place about 150 years before Phase I begins. Think of it like the Star wars prequel films, which took place years before the events of the original films. The two stories are still connected, but you can start with the second before you dive into the first.

Up to this point, release order has mostly dictated what to read first, next, and last. Now, Path of Deceit is changing that.

The book is set approximately 150 years before Light of the Jedi, which means this phase takes place about 400 years before the prequels and the events of The Phantom Menace. A lot can change in 400 years, which means the galaxy will look a lot different this far in the past. But this story and the ones that follow it will maintain the key elements of the Star Wars stories that have come before it, as all Star Wars books do.

At this point in The High Republic, the Jedi serve a very different purpose in the galaxy than they do during the time of the Galactic Republic. Simple things like across-galaxy communication also aren’t as simple as they will be by then, creating new challenges Star Wars characters of the future won’t struggle with quite so much.

The High Republic books have produced many New York Times Best Seller titles, and have received equally high praise from readers. Path of Deceit and the books soon to follow will likely be no different.
