One of the most anticipated Star Wars video games of 2023, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, will take place during a unique time in a galaxy far, far away — one that hasn’t been explored much in canon thus far.

Game Director Stig Asmussen told Game Informer that the game, which releases late this winter, will take place about five years after the end of the first game in the hit series.

“It’s five years since the first game, and the dark times are still in full swing,” said Asmussen. “He’s an unconventional Jedi, and he has to do unconventional things. So, something that would be frowned upon during the height of the Jedi Order? Cal’s finding he’s going to do whatever it takes.”

Up until this point, not many Star Wars stories in canon have touched this particular era in Star Wars — but that will soon change in more ways than one. In March, Sam Maggs’ Battle Scars novel will serve as a prequel to the upcoming game, and The Bad Batch Season 2, which premieres on January 4, will take place in the years following Order 66.

The majority of the content released in canon has largely skipped over the midpoint between Revenge of the Sith and Obi-Wan Kenobi, which takes place about a decade after the former.

It’s a critical time in the galaxy even though not much seems to be happening on a larger scale — and this makes it an intriguing place to add a story told through a video game. Not every story needs to have the highest stakes to leave the greatest impact. Sometimes, even smaller stories change the way we look at Star Wars and its characters moving forward.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor releases on Xbox, PlayStation and PC on March 17, 2023.
