J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm Drop “The Force Awakens” Trailer Bomb

The release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still yet over a year away but fans will have a chance to see the first teaser trailer for the new film this holiday weekend.

That’s right, Dork Siders! If you happen to live near one of the “select theaters” that have been chosen to premiere the new trailer this Friday, you’ll be one of the first to see the first new Star Wars footage seen in nearly a decade.

The bad news is, Lucasfilm has decided to include only 30 theaters nationwide in their attempt to bring new Star Wars to the people.

From the official Star Wars site:

"An early 88-second tease of Star Wars: The Force Awakens can be seen in 30 theaters across North America beginning Friday morning, November 28. Following this weekend, the tease can be seen in theaters around the world this December."

On Monday morning, The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams was up to his old handwritten note card trick. Even though Regal Cinemas had already jumped the gun and let the teaser trailer cat out of the bag, Abrams gave Star Wars fans a thrill with an explosive photo posted to the Bad Robot Twitter feed. More artistic than his previous note card tweets, the tweet included the word “THANKSGIVING” in all caps.

So, where do we go to see this “88 SECONDS” of brand new Star Wars awesomeness? Now that Regal Cinemas has been joined by the likes of Carmike Cinemas, AMC Theaters and Cinemark, fans in several major markets across the U.S. will have that opportunity.

Here’s a full list of theaters carrying The Force Awakens teaser trailer this holiday weekend, per the official Star Wars site…

So, what if I don’t live anywhere near any of these thirty “select” theaters?!

Well, that’s tough luck. Considering the header of the announcement post over at Star Wars, more theaters will be carrying the trailer come December. Most likely, the first proper weekend of the month, December 5th through the 6th. Until then, you’re sure to find the teaser trailer on the internet. Whether or not Disney and Lucasfilm decide to try and top the pirates by posting an official video themselves, that remains to be seen. Regardless, only a select few number of Star Wars fans will have the honest chance to catch the trailer the way it should be seen, on the big screen.

This whole situation has left plenty of fans pretty disappointed, particularly outside of the U.S. It’s still unclear as to how or even why the powers that be decided to release the first trailer this way but it’s proven to be quite unpopular already. Let’s hope this is just one single misstep in the era of Disney’s Star Wars promotion.

How do you feel about the way that Lucasfilm revealed their plans to release the new teaser trailer for The Force Awakens? Are you one of the lucky fans who live near a theater that’s premiering the 88 seconds of new Star Wars footage this Friday?
