Is Game of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie the chrome trooper Captain Phasma?

Since June of 2014, when Gwendoline Christie was officially announced as joining the cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, everyone from dedicated Star Wars websites to fan blogs and message boards, have been trying to deduce the actress’ role in Episode VII.

Recent rumors from some very reliable websites, such as Making Star Wars and Badass Digest, have Christie’s role pegged as that of Captain Phasma, an Imperial officer wearing chrome-plated Stormtrooper armor with a black and red cape, who is the leader of an elite group of Stormtroopers who themselves are part of an Imperialist group called First Order.

Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth on Game of Thrones

If you aren’t familiar with Gwendoline Christie, allow me to introduce her. Christie portrays Brienne of Tarth on HBO’s wildly popular – ratings-smashing show, Game of Thrones. Brienne is a tall and homely character in A Song of Ice and Fire (the books that Game of Thrones is based upon), and while most definitely tall of stature Gwendoline Christie has negated that homely look that Brienne is known for. The actress is exquisitely beautiful,  and talented to boot. She has brought depth and complexity to a role that is one-dimensional.

Back to the actress’ role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Christie herself has been quiet on the subject of her involvement in the movie, and when asked, her answer is always along the lines of her not being allowed to discuss it.

Badass Digest believes they have the answer, when it comes to Gwendoline Christie:

"“According to my sources Gwendoline Christie is playing John Boyega’s commanding officer in Star Wars Episode VII, and she’s mad that he deserted. She’s looking for him. She’s an antagonist.”"

That seems to vibe with all, and I do mean each and every rumor hitting the Internet, of the information regarding Gwendoline’s character in TFA. Cinema Blend had this to say about the actress and the troopers who are supposedly under her command:

"“Rumor has it that these new Imperial goons are an elite tactical unit, a best-of-the-best kind of team, and that Gwendoline Christie’s Captain Phasma runs the show, and it’s possible that it’s her we see in this footage.”"

And rounding out the list of sites that I personally trust with rumors and news, Making Star Wars is convinced that Gwendoline Christie is without a doubt the chromed-out armor wearing Captian Phasma:

"“There is a shot of Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), the chrome Stormtrooper, very briefly.”"

Now, that description came on April 6th, 10 full days ago, and they nailed it. See? I told you I trust MSW…they’ve more than earned it.

So will Gwendoline Christie in fact portray Captain Phasma? Is this her in the newest Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer? From all the rumored descriptions, it sure would seems so, but we don’t actually know, because even today’s Force Awakens Panel at the Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, Christie did not make an appearance, nor did JJ Abrams, the movie’s director, say a word about her. Hopefully, we will get some confirmation this week, as the Star Wars Celebration roles on through Sunday April 19th.
