Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Who is Captain Phasma?

The month of June is almost upon us, and with it, comes the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con. This year’s Comic-Con promises to be huge for Star Wars fans, as J.J. Abrams and The Force Awakens will take center stage in Hall H. On hand will be some of the cast and crew from the newest film in the Star Wars saga, and hopefully we will get some more information on the movie’s more mysterious character…that and a new trailer would be neat…but I digress.

One of the most mysterious characters in The Force Awakens, is the chromed-out stormtrooper, Captain Phasma. We don’t know much about this shiny new warrior, who apparently fights for the First Order, but we do know that Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), will be the woman behind the mask.

There have been several rumors and clues as to what exactly Captian Phasma’s role in the story is. One rumor states that she is escaped trooper turned good guy, Finn’s officer, and is angrily hunting him down, with the intention of bringing him back to the brass of the First Order for court martial and execution.

Another rumor holds that Captain Phasma is the head of an elite group serving the First Order, hunting down Force users in the galaxy. Think of it as a continuation of Order 66, where the clone troops were brainwashed into killing their Jedi commanders. If the First Order is bent on eradicating the Resistance (formerly the Rebel Alliance), then using an elite group of soldiers/assassins to take out the rebellion’s strongest weapons, the Jedi, would be the way to do it.

And finally, one rumor boldly claims that Captain Phasma, while being the leader of an elite group in the First Order, is a Force user herself, and part of her compliment of weapons, is two chrome lightsabers. This would make Captain Phasma not a Sith Lord, but more of a Sith fanatic, or Inquisitor. Her job would be to hunt down potential Jedi and exterminate them for her master, whom I believe to be Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis).

If this rumor were true, and personally I hope it is, then we would see a female warrior with both the capability to mow the Jedi/Resistance down with laser fire from her rifle, or bring the fight close with hand to hand combat…or rather lightsaber to lightsaber combat. Also, if the above concept art of two chrome lightsabers do in fact belong to Captain Phasma, then that would mean she would be employing the fourth form of lightsaber combat, Ataru, and dual wield them, making her that much more dangerous.

Regardless of the role that Captain Phasma will actually have in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the fact that she stands out from the common stormtrooper, in her chrome armor and red/black cape, means that she will have a much larger role to play, in the unfolding of events, in this newest Star Wars trilogy.
