Star Wars Meets Mad Max in ‘Road Wars: The Imperator Strikes Back’ Mashup

At first glance, Star Wars and Mad Max don’t have much in common. One is set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away; the other is set on our own planet in a post-apocalyptic future. Most Star Wars films are lighthearted, escapist adventures; Mad Max movies are gritty, exhausting affairs that make you feel like you have to brush your teeth afterward.

Many of us want to live in the Star Wars universe. I don’t know anyone who’d want to exist in Mad Max’s world.

But a new video from YouTube filmmaker Krishna Shenoi, called Road Wars: The Imperator Strikes Back, highlights the similarities between the two franchise’s latest installments (Mad Max: Fury Road, which came out in May, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which releases in December) while giving us a kickass mashup.

Shenoi uses amazing digital trickery and superb editing skills to seamlessly blend the two worlds together. That gives us shots of TIE fighters swooping through a desert storm, and Imperator Furiosa venting her anger under the twin Tatooine suns. In fact, Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, certainly gives off a Sith vibe with her mechanical limb and brooding presence, so her wielding a lightsaber in this mashup makes perfect sense.

If you haven’t yet seen Fury Road, you should fix that immediately, as it’s not only one of the best action movies this year, it’s one of the best of all time. Like Star Wars, director George Miller and his crew took care to use special effects to enhance the practical techniques they employed, and the result is a visceral, spellbinding movie.

Let’s petition for a Mad Max prequel starring Boba Fett and Imperator Furiosa as they hijack a convoy of podracers and race across Tatooine with the Empire and Immortan Joe hot on their tails. Jar Jar Binks even gets some redemption when he’s cast as the Doof Warrior.
