31. Han Solo Almost Died in Return of the Jedi
One of the most well known Star Wars facts is that Han Solo was supposed to die at the end of Empire Strikes Back and not appear in Return of the Jedi. What isn’t known as well is that Han Solo almost died at the end of the final film in the original trilogy.
Harrison Ford lobbied hard for Han to die and he wasn’t alone during production. Producer Gary Kurtz pitched an idea that Han Solo dies at the end of the Rebel attack on the Empire, leaving Luke Skywalker so distraught that he abandons the rebellion and retreats into a life of obscurity — much like Obi-Wan in A New Hope.
Despite the numerous ideas to kill off Han, George Lucas ultimately decided to keep the hero alive — which is good news for the actor, as he is back in the role some 32 years later for The Force Awakens.
