17. Alec Guinness Hated Star Wars

When Alec Guinness was hired to star in A New Hope, it was a massive grab for a film that was truly independent. Guinness was in the twilight of his career, but he was still a legendary thespian who had films like Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia under his belt. So the idea of an actor of his stature appearing in a science fiction movie might have seemed a bit odd to some.

Guinness was among that faction. The actor notoriously hated the film after it came out, and distanced himself from the movie and the role of Obi-Wan as much as he could. One famous story involves a child approaching Guinness asking him for an autograph, to which Guinness would only agree to sign if the child agreed to never again watch Star Wars.

Alec Guinness is everyone’s grumpy grandpa — and he’s always going to be Obi-Wan.
