42. The Asteroid Is Actually A Space Monster

Film: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

The Moment: In an attempt to shake an Imperial tail, Han Solo pilots the Millennium Falcon into an asteroid field too dangerous for Imperial Cruisers to enter. With one tail shook, Han takes the Falcon into an asteroid cave in an effort to lose the TIE Fighters that were on scouting missions to find the band of heroes. Everything went to plan, expect for the fact that the cave they were inside was actually the belly of a space monster.

Why It’s Memorable: This is one of the most iconic moments of the original trilogy, and one of the best WTF moments we ever had when it comes to the Millennium Falcon. It was a perfectly executed bit and one that totally went sideways on everyone in ways we didn’t even imagine.

The best part about this was the slow burn to realization that we all had — including the characters. We were told a couple of different times that random danger had entreated the equation and that culminated in the revelation that we were inside of something. The shot of the Falcon flying through the teeth of the beast and away from it’s lurching jaws is one that still sticks with us.
