40. Starship Crashes into The Executioner’s Bridge

Film: Star Wars Episode IV: Return of the Jedi

The Moment: As the rebellion and empire battle around the Death Star II, the tide begins to turn against the Imperials and the Rebels begin to gain an upper hand. The clincher in the battle, which alters the tide for good, happens when the super star destroyer known as The Executor — Darth Vader’s cruiser — is taken down after a rebel ship crashes into the bridge and sends the massive cruiser towards the Death Star’s surface.

Why It’s Memorable: It’s one of those moments that you don’t think of right off the top of your head but you instantly remember it when someone brings it up — kind of like right now. It was a tide shifting moment in the Battle of Endor, as it gave the rebels the upper hand they needed and served as a symbol of the shift in momentum.

This R2-D2 speaker is a must-have for any Star Wars fan.

It also tied up a loose end that was dangling which we didn’t consider much. We knew the Empire would be defeated some way and there would be resolution with Vader and the Emperor, but we didn’t give much thought to things like the ships these characters had. There’s no final resolution like exploding into the surface of the Death Star in an iconic shot.
