36. Count Dooku Cuts Off Anakin’s Arm

Film: Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

The Moment: Obi-Wan and Anakin follow Count Dooku to his secret hangar bay on Geonosis and engage him in an effort to prevent him from leaving the planet. Obi-Wan fails to subdue Dooku in a lightsaber fight, but Anakin steps ini to try and help his master out. Instead, he gets overzealous and ends up getting his arm cut off by Dooku.

Why It’s Memorable: Say what you will about the wooden way that George Lucas tells a story, but there is some serious symbolism and foreshadowing going on here in this moment. We all knew there would be a moment when Anakin started becoming more machine than man, and this was the beginning of that.

Just like his son, Luke, Anakin was maimed in the second film of his trilogy and forced to replace his missing limb with a mechanical limb. It was also another moment where Anakin reacted rather than thinking about a situation first — and it resulted in him getting his arm cut off. It’s not as though this is a moment that began a downfall towards the dark side, but it was the first time that a piece of the person he was died and was no longer there.
