34. Jar Jar Plunges Galaxy Into Darkness
Film: Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
The Moment: With Padme in hiding for her own protection, Naboo appoints Jar Jar Binks as the representative in the senate. The only problem with that is a massive vote about the creation of a clone army is brought forth and the decision to give emergency powers to the chancellor is placed at the feet of Jar Jar. After the briefest moment of manipulation ever, Jar Jar votes for emergency powers to be given to Palpatine.
Why It’s Memorable: This is it — it’s the single worst thing that ever happened to the galaxy. It’s zero hour for the fall of the republic, as this is the moment that the clone army was authorized for use by the republic and was basically the birth of stormtroopers and the empire.

There were other moments that needed to happen before we were given the galaxy we saw in the original trilogy, but it was all made possible by the dimwittedness of Jar Jar. Everything bad that happened from Episode II onward was put into motion by Jar Jar which by default makes him the absolute worst character in the franchise for more reasons than his outward stupidity. That’s probably not an accident either.
