32. Luke Meets Yoda For The First Time
Film: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
The Moment: Luke hears a message from Obi-Wan, who speaks to him from beyond the grave, that he must go to the Dagobah system and find the great Jedi master Yoda to learn the ways of The Force. Upon arriving to the swampy planet, Luke encounters a small green character who bafoonishly stumbles around his camp before revealing himself to be the Yoda he seeks, and that the drunken act was a test.
Why It’s Memorable: It’s our first introduction to Yoda — so how can’t this one be memorable. But beyond that, it’s a serious WTF moment for a variety of reasons. Initially, we have no idea who this character is and become frustrated only to find out it’s Yoda. If we’re coming in with the prequels under our belts, the WTF factor still works in that we have never seen this version of Yoda in the past, as he’s always been composed and oozing wisdom.
It’s hard to have a WTF moment work on multiple levels from multiple angles like that but this is how that moment manages to be so memorable. Yoda is a memorable character in his own right but this takes things to a whole different level of awesome.
