31. It’s Not A Moon, It’s A Death Star

Film: Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

The Moment: Han, Luke, Chewie and Obi-Wan all escape Tatooine, only to encounter a TIE Fighter in deep space near where Alderaan should be. They quickly realize that the ship might be lost since it’s so far away from a fleet and plan to destroy it until they see it fling towards a distant moon. Obi-Wan is the first to realize that it’s not a moon, but the Death Star that the ship is flying towards.

Why It’s Memorable: It’s one of the most memorable and well-known lines in all of movie history. Everyone who has seen A New Hope knows this line and it’s one that will stick with us forever.

Aside from that, it’s also a classic moment in general for the film. It’s a slow burn to the revelation of the Death Star, as we had no idea our heroes were barreling that directly towards the instrument of doom. We already knew the Death Star was bad news and that at some point our heroes were going to have to deal with it, but this acted as a nice little twist that they encountered in this fashion — and the way the drama unfolded was pure brilliance. Alec Guinness has a slew of great scenes to his credit, but this is easily Top 5.
