29. Anakin Kills Count Dooku

Film: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

The Moment: Obi-Wan and Anakin arrive at the bridge of a droid starship to try and rescue the kidnapped Chancellor Palpatine. Before they can spring him loose, Count Dooku appears and challenges the duo to a lightsaber fight to the death. With Obi-Wan knocked out of the battle, Anakin overpowers Dooku but wants to take him prisoner. Palpatine insists he be killed, and Anakin gives in, decapitating Dooku and killing Darth Sidious’ apprentice.

Why It’s Memorable: It’s the first major death of the darkest Star Wars film in the franchise, and it’s also one of the jumping off points for Anakin’s turn to the dark side. We had already seen him go dark in Attack of the Clones, but this is yet another occasion where he gives into Palpatine’s wishes.

It’s also significant in that Anakin cleared a place at the dark side table for him to take Dooku’s place. It was the last thing that needed to happen for Palpatine to make surer Anakin was his next Sith apprentice. Oh yeah, there’s also the whole another character got his head cut off thing, but after Jango Fett in Episode II, this wasn’t as shocking as it otherwise would have been.
