24. Yoda Says There’s Another Skywalker
Film: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
The Moment: As Luke goes against the wishes of Yoda and Obi-Wan to fly to Cloud City and attempt to rescue Han, Leia and Chewie, it seems that all hope in saving the Jedi has been lost. But as Luke flies away, Yoda mentions to a ghost figure of Obi-Wan that there is another who they can invest their hopes in and Luke isn’t the last of the Jedi, so to speak.
Why It’s Memorable: It’s an unexpected WTF moment as it’s all in the dialogue. There’s no jump scare or huge physical action that takes place to usher in this moment — in fact, there isn’t even a ton of lighting on the scene. In the dark ,with symbolic blue and red lights intermittently lighting Yoda, he says the Luke isn’t the last of the Jedi and heavily implies that there’s another Skywalker.
The whole moment is foreshadowing on the big twist that will come later, but it raises questions beyond that as it’s not revealed that Leia is Luke’s sister — even if it’s heavily implied from everything we have seen and felt at that point in time. It was a big moment for the saga, and a moment of slow realization for all of us.
