49. Darth Maul’s Lightsaber Revealed
Film: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
The Moment: As the small Naboo resistance group pushes its way through the hangar bay and into the palace, they are cut off by Darth Maul. Rather than fight him as a group, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon break off and take him on by themselves. In revealing himself to the group, Maul ignites not one but two sides of his lightsaber handle, showing us a double-bladed weapon we’d never seen before.
Why It’s Memorable: First off, it’s Darth Maul which makes it amazing on the surface. But beyond that we all remember this moment and getting chills when it was on the big screen. Even at home on Blu-ray the moment is still one of the coolest of the prequels, as we get out first truly good look at the demon Darth Maul is.
The reveal of his double-bladed lightsaber though was something that put this moment over the top. It was a flawless sequence of events and it kicked off the best part of the first two movies in the prequel trilogy of films. That entire lightsaber fight is worth watching the other two hours of The Phantom Menace, but this moment will always be one of the best Lucas ever came up with.
