GIF Breakdown of the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens International Trailer
Well, well…looks like we’ve been treated to some all new footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, thanks to the international trailer which just dropped today. I can honestly say that I am shocked we got this little gift from Disney/Lucasfilm, as I was certain the third trailer would be the last new footage we’d see until the worldwide premiere on December 17 and 18. Just to refresh your memory, here’s the trailer:
That’s some pretty amazing stuff, especially the Kylo Ren and Rey interaction. There’s also the Kylo Ren lightsaber being put on display…which I find rather curious. Of course, the unique crossguard saber was the focus of much debate, when the first teaser was released in 2014, but it seems this international trailer really focused on the wild and unstable energy from the blade.
Our first GIF shows Rey standing in front of a mostly submerged Super Star Destroyer engine. The very same Star Destroyer that crashed into Jakku’s surface some 29 years before The Force Awakens.
The second GIF features Rey meeting BB-8 for the first time. As you can see, there is net on the sand where she has cut the little droid free, and then the two walk off, toward home.
We’ve got some more BB-8. Besides Kylo Ren’s lightsaber, it seems the international trailer also really likes everyone’s new favorite soccer ball droid.
This is a beautiful shot of a squadron of TIE Fighters flying with what appears to be the Jakku sunset.
First Order attacks a village. Captain Phasma played by Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie, leads the troops.
Here’s the wild and unstable nature of Kylo Ren’s lightsaber, on display.

I absolutely love this next GIF. Showing the outside of the front of the X-Wing as it dives beneath the clouds is an absolute stunning shot from J.J. Abrams.
Rey running for her staff. (I still think that staff is concealing a double-bladed lightsaber)
Finn igniting Luke’s lost lightsaber, which used to belong to Luke’s father, Anakin. Remember, it was recovered by Obi-Wan in Revenge of the Sith, after he defeated Anakin (Vader).
Chewbacca hitting a remote detonator perhaps?
Here’s that Chewie GIF with the explosion that follows. I don’t think that the hanger’s destruction is from Chewbacca’s hitting that detonator…I believe it happens when Finn and Poe escape the Star Destroyer in their pilfered TIE Fighter.
This GIF of Kylo Ren igniting his lightsaber at Rey’s throat is fantastic. Notice the amazing acting on display by Daisy Ridley. Her facial features tell an entire story.
Rey is clearly upset here. I wonder if she’s crying over Finn, whose arm has been lopped off in a duel with Kylo Ren.
That’s it, the international trailer wasn’t very long, but it definitely provided some amazing new footage. I now don’t know if we will get more shots of the film…I personally hope not, as I want to be completely surprised when I watch The Force Awakens on December 18.
