34. Opee Sea Killer

When Did They Die: Episode I: The Phantom Menace

What Were They: A giant, predator sea creature

How Did They Die: Eaten by a bigger fish just as it was about to finish off the submersible containing Jar Jar Binks, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi

The Star Wars galaxy seems actively hostile to almost all life. Even on an apparently idyllic world like Naboo, there lurks beneath the sea a seemingly endless succession of murderous hell beasts bent on tracking down and consume just about anything they come across.

The journey through the core of the planet in order to reach the capital city on the far side is absolutely fraught with peril, though the biggest threat ends up being our friend Opee. A fish-like thing that relentlessly chases down the sub being piloted by Obi-wan, it finally meets its end when an even larger monster shows up and eats it, thereby saving our heroes.

Beyond being a passable set piece, it also gives Qui-Gon a chance to utter the line, “there’s always a bigger fish.” A pretty metaphor for the entire plot of that movie, right? The Trade

Federation seems like the primary threat, but they are only the most obvious enemy. Something even bigger and more insidious awaits our heroes.
