When Did They Die: Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Who Were They: Three wild pieces sent into the arena byl Anakin, Obi-wan and Padme’s captors to kill them

How Did They Die: Various

Oh look, even more predatory animals bent on our heros’ demise. Really though, this circumstance is a bit different. In almost all the times before and after Padme, Anakin and Obi-wan’s adventure in the fighting pits of Geonosis, their encounters with alien beasts have almost always been in the wild. These three – a giant lizard bug, a wolf cat and a rhino bull – are, however, captives, and forced to go out and entertain for their dinner and each every day presumably.

Does that give them an ounce or two more sympathy? Maybe. Still, in a battle of them vs. the forces of good, good will always win.

In terms of storytelling, these three animals represent another easy way for Jedi (and Padme) to kill things without feeling all that bad about it. Like the droids and clones elsewhere in the movie, they are there merely as non-human fodder, to be disemboweled and killed at our heros’ leisure.

Funko POP! figures are super collectible right now, so check out ThinkGeek’s inventory.

You can call it cynical writing, but how hard would it be to jive with the Jedi if instead of these three animals, Anakin and Obi-wan slaughtered wave after wave of Geonosians? Even if they are bugs, they’re still sentient. It wouldn’t really work, would it?
