2. The Lightsaber vs the Bat’leth

Is there a more recognizable weapon that the Lightsaber? If you see one, you instantly associate it with Star Wars. it is iconic. Does the Bat’leth do the same for Star Trek? Would a casual fan be able to identify the Klingon melee weapon of choice, and place it with the correct film franchise? I would argue, no.

Since Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, lightsabers have been the obsession of both the young and the old, male and female, serious and casual fan. How many times did you take your mother’s spent wrapping paper cardboard tube and run around your house making the familiar lightsaber sounds, while battling imaginary foes, be they Sith or Jedi?

Now compare the Bat’leth to the lightsaber, if they were to ever confront each other in battle. Disregarding that a Klingon warrior might be able to duck and dodge a Sith or Jedi wielding a lightsaber, for a time, eventually the two weapons would meet, and the lightsaber would sheer right through the metal of the Bat’leth, and down into the Klingon holding it.

Winner: Lightsabers. Call me old fashion, but I don’t see any old wrapping paper tubes being turned into Bat’leths. I mean, seriously, you could put your eye out!
