While he may have committed one of the worst strategic moves in galactic history while attacking the Death Star II, you can’t deny that Ackbar was at the helm the the Rebels won the war. It was a messy plan that wasn’t executed with a ton of grace, but Ackbar led the assault on the Death Star II that helped win the war for the rebellion, which is basically the only job he had to do.

Akbar is one of those Star Wars character who didn’t have a ton of screen time but is someone that fans just can’t get enough of. That’s really what helps his credibility here, as fans have latched onto Ackbar in a big way, thanks in large part to ‘It’s a Trap!’, but there’s no denying his popularity among fans.
