9. Why are the Skywalkers, as a family, so important?

The story from Revenge of the Sith as told by Darth Sidious of Darth Plagueis’s ability to create life using the Force, implies Anakin Skywalker was created using this method. James Luceno’s novel about the Sith lord in question, which is currently under Legend status and therefore not canon (unless the Lucasfilm story group says otherwise), claims it was not Plagueis who created a living being, at least not directly; rather, the Force responded to his attempt to control it by channeling that energy into the creation of a human being.

In either case, whether Plagueis or the Force itself is responsible for Anakin’s conception, the question remains: Why choose Shmi Skywalker to be the bearer of the Chosen One? What is it about her and her progeny, from Anakin to Luke and Leia, that makes them the perfect vessels for destiny in the galaxy?

This is something which was never addressed in either the original or the prequel trilogy, and with the Force awakening, and a particular Skywalker conspicuously missing, the question is more relevant than ever.
