Star Wars: The Force Awakens Breaks Fandango Ticket Sales Record

Unless you’ve just returned from a galaxy far, far away yourself, you’re no doubt aware that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is selling a lot of tickets before it even officially opens. Like, a whole lot of tickets.

But just when you think you’re as amazed as you can possible be by the advance drawing power of this movie, something else pops up that makes you shake your head at how eagerly anticipated The Force Awakens truly is. So here’s another one: it’s already sold more tickets than any movie ever through the ticketing service Fandango.

That’s right, even though the movie only arrives in theaters tonight, it’s already moved more tickets through Fandango than all other movies have during their entire theatrical runs. Variety reports that the previous record-holder was Jurassic World, which obviously set the mark earlier this year.

It’s no secret that more and more moviegoers are buying their tickets via mobile and online portals, of which Fandango is the biggest. That makes it fairly unsurprising that a 2015 movie would be the company’s top seller of all time.

Still, you can’t help but be impressed that The Force Awakens is creating a level of interest that is unprecedented — for the 21st century, at least, because the last time I can recall this type of pre-release hysteria was for Star Wars: Episode I. That said, Disney has been sticking to its message for the week, encouraging even more people who might think all showings for the weekend are already sold out to seek out tickets, because plenty are still out there.

Buy them through Fandango and you can play your own small part in history, it seems.
