Star Wars The Force Awakens: Is Rey related to Obi-Wan?

We’re all trying to guess who Rey’s parents are — but could Obi-Wan Kenobi be her mystery relative?

BEWARE! Possible spoilers lie ahead.

One of the biggest questions we all have after watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens is just who Rey’s parents are and what her lineage is. There is massive speculation that she’s a Skywalker, but that seems like something that is way too simple to wait two years to have revealed.

Let’s also consider the fact that we’ve already had that card played with Kylo Ren and Han Solo, so to repeat it in Episode VIII would be a bit much. That being said, it’s still very possible that Rey has a bloodline connected to a character we’ve seen before — perhaps to Obi-Wan Kenobi.

It makes sense if you think about it. Obi-Wan is heard speaking to Rey in her Force vision, not Luke. Why would Obi-Wan — someone who has been dead for decades — be trying to connect with the last of the Jedi and not Luke, who has more motivation than a dead Obi-Wan to correct his wrong.

The Force.net speculates that a plot line in the Clone Wars television series might suggest that Obi-Wan fathered a child at some point during his life.

"Anyone who has watched Clone Wars will know Obi-Wan had a relationship with Duchess Satine Kryze leader of the Mandalorians. In fact when Obi-Wan was still a Padawan he and Qui-Gon protected her for over a year. Obi-Wan and Satine grew so close that Obi-Wan stated he would have renounced his vows to the Jedi order had she asked. Now Qui-Gon was certainly no stickler for the rules, but fathering a child is in fact not against the Jedi code. The attachment that usually comes with such things is the issue. So Obi-Wan could easily have fathered a child with Satine and remained a Jedi so long as he was detached enough from the situation. This child being of both Mandalorian and Jedi descent would have to be kept a secret. It would have been an affront to the mandalorians seeking to return to the old ways and a target of assassination as a result."

Of course, there’s a major issues with this theory, being Rey is young in The Force Awakens, implying that she was born sometime towards the end of the Galactic Civil War. Obi-Wan died in A New Hope, when Luke was still a young kid and Rey was fathered by Obi-Wan during the Clone Wars, then she would have been an old lady by the time The Force Awakens rolls around.

All this being said, Obi-Wan doesn’t have to be the father of Rey for her bloodline to be connected to the Kenobi’s. Obi-Wan simply needed to father a child who then was a parent of Rey for her family tree to connect back to him. There is enough evidence to support this theory that it could end up being true.

  • Obi-Wan speaks to Rey, not Luke
  • Obi-Wan has a deeper connection to Luke/Anakin’s lightsaber than Luke does
  • We’ve already had the character being related to the Skywalker/Solo clan card played

Of course, it makes a ton more sense if she is related to Luke but you can’t count out the very real possibility that she’s related to Obi-Wan. Not only does this differentiate from the Kylo Ren storyline, but it all connects this new trilogy to Obi-Wan and the two previous trilogies in a pretty clever and unexpected way.

H/T to SlashFilm for sending us down this wormhole of speculation.
