Lupita Nyong’o has yet to film scenes for Star Wars: Episode VIII
Actress Lupita Nyong’o, who plays Maz Kanata in a motion capture role, has yet to film her scenes for Star Wars: Episode VIII…
Website Collider recently interviewed Lupita Nyong’o while at the Toronto International Film Festival, and amongst other topics, asked the actress about Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII. Nyong’o revealed, during the interview, that despite the film having officially wrapped shooting just over a month ago, she has yet to film scenes for her motion capture role of Maz Kanata.
Here’s the interview:
The subject of Star Wars: Episode VIII and what it was like working with director Rian Johnson, is broached, to which Nyong’o replies she hasn’t worked with Johnson, yet.
"“Rian! I haven’t worked with him yet; I’ve yet to shoot. That’s in my future.”"
Of course, since the actress is actually filming all her scenes as mocap (motion capture), then it’s not necessary for her to be on-hand for the actual filming of the sequel to The Force Awakens. This easily explains why she hasn’t worked with Rian Johnson yet.

Nyong’o plays Maz Kanata, a very powerful Force wielder who does not identify as a Jedi, though she does follow the Light Side of the Force. Despite not having much to do in The Force Awakens, Maz will return for Episode VIII, and Star Wars fans are hoping to learn more about the mysterious character, in the film.
Andy Serkis, who portrays Supreme Leader Snoke in a mocap role as well, may be in the same boat as Nyong’o, in regards to not yet filming their scenes for Episode VIII.
