With Star Wars: Episode VIII still over a year away and everything quiet about it on the news front, it’s easy to just forget who else is in the movie besides the main characters from The Force Awakens.
For us, this means being reminded of both new additions to the Episode VIII cast and the return of minor characters elicits an “Oh yeah! I forgot about them!” It’s important that we remember these characters, however. They are the dark horses, the wild cards, the arbiters of new plot twists and storylines. To refresh our memories, and yours, we’ve made a list of five actors and actresses, who we basically forgot are official members of the Episode VIII cast.
5. Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata

Remember Maz Kanata? Of course you do; how could you forget the tiny orange alien lady from The Force Awakens who is over a thousand years old and runs a pirate cantina? But it may have been doubtful she was going to be in Episode VIII, because we didn’t see what happened to her after her palace was destroyed by the First Order. The last time we saw her, she was crouching in the rubble of her old home, urging Finn to use Luke Skywalker’s old lightsaber to defend himself against stormtroopers.
If Maz Kanata wasn’t going be in Episode VIII, I would have been disappointed. Not just because I want to see more from the character, but because it’s sloppy storytelling to not show us what happened to her after the events of The Force Awakens. But we can thank the Maker, because Lupita Nyong’o was listed as part of the main cast of Episode VIII back in February. This time around, maybe we’ll get some answers on how she acquired Luke’s lightsaber.
