As we mentioned in the previous slide, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story takes place 19 years after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, and ends mere moments before, or right into, Star Wars: A New Hope. In one regard, as Lucasfilm would have it, the film is absolutely a standalone film, as there are all-new characters, planets, ships, and stories to tell.
However, Rogue One is also both a sequel and a prequel, as it fits between the Prequel Trilogy and the Sequel Trilogy. One of the best explanations videos I have ever seen of the Star Wars timeline, and where Rogue One fits in, is one done by USA Today. Check it out:
So, there you have it. You are all caught up on where Rogue One: A Star Wars Story fits into the Star Wars Cinematic Timeline. Now, when you are headed to the theater with your friends and family and someone inevitably asks you this all important question, then you’ll know how to answer. You’re welcome.
