The Star Wars universe is not just for boys. To prove it, we’ve made a list of the 50 best female characters from the movies, tv shows, comics, and books.
Since Star Wars premiered in 1977, parents and merchandise marketers have made the mistake of thinking the franchise is only for boys. This is because, in the original film, Princess Leia is the only active female character. Her uniqueness as a princess who essentially saved herself is overlooked in the search for female role models for young girls.
Now, however, the Star Wars universe’s gender diversification has greatly expanded. The recent television shows, comics, books, and films introduced a galaxy of new, well-rounded, thoughtful female characters for all fans to love.
To celebrate the female side of Star Wars, we’ve made a list of 50 of the best female characters in the franchise. We pulled from the films, The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, and comics and books (both Legends and canon) to gather the best of the best. It wasn’t easy. There are so many great female characters in the saga now, it was hard to choose and make a ranking. But we did it, and we hope you enjoy the results.
Coming in at 50 is a character who didn’t get much screentime in The Phantom Menace, but whose similarity to a popular hero has us wanting more.
