Deciding that Maul still had some use left, Sidious had him taken to the infamous Spire prison in an effort to draw out Mother Talzin. Talzin, leader of the Nightsisters on Dathomir, was arguably Sidious’ only competition in the galaxy outside of the Jedi. Sidious’ plan worked, and Darth Maul was soon rescued by Death Watch loyalists. Shortly thereafter, the Shadow Collective met the Separatist army head-on in an attempt to regain control of Mandalore. Despite superior forces on a per-unit scale, the Collective was far outnumbered by the droid army.

Darth Maul even went head-to-head with General Grievous, but in his weakened state was bested by the droid monster. His forces losing and his will depleted, Maul retreated.

At the direction of Mother Talzin, Maul attempted one last effort to retain relevancy in the galaxy. In a seemingly-effective attack on Count Dooku and General Grievous, Darth Maul captured the pair and brought them to Dathomir.

Grievous would soon escape, but Dooku begrudgingly – and falsely – allied himself with Darth Maul. The faux alliance was brief, however, and the arrival of Darth Sidious would reveal Dooku’s deception. Sidious, Dooku, and General Grievous engaged Maul and Mother Talzin. After an intense demonstration of Dark Side power, the Sith emerged victorious. Mother Talzin fell to Grievous as she sacrificed herself for Maul, who yet again escaped.
