A GIF breakdown of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi teaser trailer
Earlier today at Star Wars Celebration Orlando, we finally saw the first look at Star Wars: The Last Jedi….
Star Wars Celebration Orlando is off to a great start. On Thursday, the Star Wars 40th Anniversary panel was held, where Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker) made an appearance and a beautiful tribute to the late Carrie Fisher was shown.
Today, however, was the money day. The Last Jedi panel did, in fact, deliver on what many fans were speculating would be the very first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. And, just in case you haven’t watched, oh, let’s say a few hundred times by now, here’s another look:
Now that we’ve all seen that trailer again, let’s break down some of the better scenes using the magic of GIF (That’s GIF with a hard “G” because we’re not animals).
The Last Jedi trailer begins with Rey obviously getting in her daily Jedi Padawan workout.
We hear Luke’s voice as he tells her: “Breathe. Just, breathe.”
“Now, just reach out.”
This is obviously the Force responding to Rey, as the rocks move around her hands.
Then Luke asks Rey what she sees. “Light,” Rey answers, as the camera zooms in on the back of Leia looking at a map overlay screen.
Rey continues telling Luke what she sees, as the broken and shattered husk of Kylo Ren’s mask is shown: “Darkness.”
Rey finishes with, “the balance.” It is here where we see some strange paintings on some older cloth-like material. Is that a map legend, or is it something resembling the Starbird crest?
And then we hear Luke whisper, “It’s so much bigger.” Then we see Rey practicing her lightsaber skills on the cliffs of Luke’s planet of exile, Ahch-To.
Now things start to speed up. We’ve got a scene on the new Star Wars planet of Crait, as Resistance fighters pilot skimmer speeders toward First Order walkers.
Finn in what appears to be a medical stasis pod.
Finn’s bro, Poe Dameron and his trusty astromech, BB-8 running towars Poe’s Black Leader X-Wing before, oh no, it’s destroyed. That’s never good. Just make sure our precious BB-8 makes it out okay, Poe, and we’ll love you forever. By the way, that now makes two X-Wings Poe Dameron has lost. When does Leia start docking his pay?
What Star Wars movie trailer would be complete without the Millennium Falcon blowing up some TIE Fighters?
We then hear Luke’s voice, “I only know one truth.” He says this while Rey runs with an ignited lightsaber (that can’t be safe).
And Kylo Ren aims his unique lightsaber at someone off-screen.
We see a “Force-back” (see flashback) of Luke falling to his knees beside R2-D2 in front of a burning Jedi Temple or Academy.
Captain Phasma walks through the wreckage of what appears to be a base somewhere, her First Order Stormtroopers in tow.
And a massive space battle ensues.
Luke Skywalker finishes the very first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi by saying, “It’s time for the Jedi to end.”
And, just like that, we anxious Star Wars fans will be waiting for at least another three to four months for another look at the film, in fact, I would hazard a guess that the next time we see footage for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, will be at D23 Expo in July.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi debuts worldwide on December 15, later this year.
