The Star Wars legend honored in San Diego with Mark Hamill day and with another surprise…

After recently being honored as a Disney Legend at D23 last month, Mark Hamill adds to his acclaim in his “hometown” near San Diego.

Hamill caught up with the local paper in San Diego, The San Diego Union Tribune, after being honored with his own “Mark Hamill” day this past weekend. In addition to having a day of honor, Hamill was gifted with a street of his own named the: “Honorary Mark Hamill Dr.”

Hamill grew up as a Navy brat himself and moved around quite a bit, but states that the San Diego area gave him a sense of home and belonging.

"I can’t tell you how great it feels to be back in my old neighborhood. To say that I am grateful would be an understatement. Part of me is honored because this community reached out and made me a part of something I’ve wanted for so long — a sense of place."

The ceremony took place in Clairemont, just 16 miles north of downtown San Diego. As always, fans flocked to Hamill, and he spent time interacting with them, as the class act is known to do.

For nearly 40 years, Hamill has provided those who were seeking a sense of place of their own, with the iconic character Luke Skywalker.

This rang true for me personally, as Skywalker and the Star Wars franchise as a whole has given me a sense of belonging over the years. Meeting like-minded fans at Star Wars Celebration, as well as on social media, there is nothing like interacting with fans of a galaxy far, far way. Growing up in San Diego myself, this news was even more meaningful to me, on a personal level.
