37. Kanan confronts Fenn Rau of Concord Dawn

Episode: Season 2 Episode 13: The Protector of Concord Dawn

The Moment: After entering Mandalorian controlled space, Hera is severely injured while engaging them in combat via the Phantom.

Kanan decides to seek out those responsible (The Protectors of Concord Dawn) for Hera’s injuries, in order to peacefully ask them for access to their air-space. Meanwhile, Sabine secretly stows away on Kanan’s vessel to seek revenge via violence. Kanan and Sabine land on the third moon of Concord Dawn, and Kanan tracks down the leader of the Protectors Fenn Rau.

Seeking a diplomatic solution to gaining airspace, Kanan requests from Rau access to travel in their controlled air-space. Rau refuses, but Kanan reveals that he’s encountered the Mandalorian protector before.

During the Clone Wars when Kanan was a Padawan, Rau had saved he and his Master Depa Bilaba’s life during a battle against the Separatists.

Kanan then bests Rau in combat, disarming him and knocking him out, kidnapping him. Rau then contacts his Protectors, informing them not to turn over the rebels to the Empire and also giving them access to their airspace.

Why It’s Memorable: Another layer of depth is added to Sabine’s character, showing her deeper connection to the Mandalorian people.

Kanan and Rau’s connection was first shown in Kanan: The Last Padawan comic run, showing the very battle mentioned in Rebels. This again shows the attention to detail the Lucasfilm Story Group pays, but not forcing the connection. They will only add these Easter eggs if the story allows it.

This also shows that Kanan embraces the Jedi way of not seeking revenge, while on the flip side Sabine shows the revenge and violence that has engulfed her people’s culture for thousands of years.
