31. The Return to Ryloth

Episode: Season 3 Episode 5: Hera’s Heroes

The Moment: Hera returns to her home planet of Ryloth with the Ghost crew to aid her father, Cham Syndulla, from the continued Imperial threat on the planet. Grand Admiral Thrawn overwhelms the Twi’lek people with his brilliant strategy and occupies the planet, as well as Cham’s residence.

Thrawn being the collector of art that he is, adds the Syndulla family kalikori to his prized collection. Ezra and Hera sneak into the residence undercover, but Thrawn easily uncovers their attempt at secrecy. The duo escapes and Hera earn Thrawn’s respect with her brilliant military mind and strategy, that he can emphasize with.

Why It’s Memorable: Anytime I read Grand Admiral Thrawn on the pages of a novel or now see him in Rebels, I’m on the edge of my seat. Rebels add the perfect devious, yet classical style music which sets the tone for the Chiss Admiral perfectly.

In the Clone Wars series, Cham Syndulla became a character that I grew to love. His love for his planet and his people is an example that I can look up to in my own life.

His character was expanded in Lords of the Sith, where he went toe to toe with the Emperor and Darth Vader, holding his own (for a while) against the evil duo.

The Syndulla kalikori importance dates back generations and generations within Hera’s family. So when Thrawn takes it as a keepsake, Hera isn’t too happy about it. Her father informs her that their family lives on in their hearts and that’s all that matters. Personally, I’m with Hera on this one. I would also be ticked if I were in her shoes.
