27. Saw Gerrea is found in Geonosis

Episode: Season 3 Episodes 12-13: Ghosts of Geonosis

The Moment: Set just two years before the events of Rogue One, we meet members of our Ghost crew on Geonosis, where we find rebel extremist Saw Gerrea. He is the lone survivor of a rebellion team that was sent to the desolate planet to find out why the planet seemed to be wiped out.

Saw, along with Ezra, Kanan, and Rex, encounter a surviving Geonosian, who is carrying (and protecting) an egg. We find out that is the egg of a Geonosian queen, who could help bring their people back from the brink of extinction. Using brutal tactics, Saw tries to get information out of the scared survivor, almost uncovering the origins of the Death Star. The group allows the Geonosian and the egg to survive and the group then leaves the desolate planet.

Why It’s Memorable: Once again, we are given a re-introduction to a Clone Wars veteran. Not just any veteran, but one with a jaded past. During the Clone Wars, Saw lost his home planet, his sister, and many of his people, which lead to the madman that we see later displayed in Rogue One.

It was fascinating to see that Saw had a little bit of humanity left when the Ghost crew finds him, but not much of it. I am actually a little surprised that Saw allowed the two surviving Geonosians to live. I would have ended them there and then with what I know about that despicable species.

A touching moment was when Ezra stumbled upon a holo-picture of Saw’s perished sister, Steela. It gave me flashbacks to the day that she was alive and well during the Clone Wars. The Death Star was originally constructed above the planet but was moved when the Imperials got wind of Gerrera’s attempt to find out what was going on. He came oh so close to learning of the Death Star before it eventually killed him and billions of others.
