18. Sabine acquires the Darksaber

Episode: Season 3 Episode 11: Visions and Voices

The Moment: In an attempt to save Ezra from Maul, Sabine travels with Kanan to the witch world of Dathomir. Maul flees, leaving behind a weapon of some interest to Sabine. She finds the darksaber, which is a weapon that runs deep into her family past, that Maul neglects to take with him.

Why It’s Memorable:  For Mandalore! The darksaber has a rich and deep history, all the way back about 1,000 years. The Jedi and Mandalorians have a heated rivalry in their past, to say the least. The darksaber, forged by Tarre Visla, has been a weapon that the Jedi and Mandalorians have fought over for years and years. If anyone in the bloodline of Clan Vizla takes up the saber, which Sabine meets the requirement of, the other Mandalorians will follow that person as their leader.

For Sabine to deal with her past and given the opportunity to make things right, which we will find out later why is such a rich moment. She knows her path, but she doesn’t want the burden of leading her people. She feels like its task of someone else. She is later taught by Kanan, which we will see later on, in the arts of Jedi combat and patience, helping her embrace that destiny.

We are first, subtly, introduced to Mandalorian culture by Boba Fett, who wears the ancient armor, but is not Mandalorian himself. His father also donned similar armor, but it’s unknown whether he was a true Mandalorian warrior or not.
