10. Maul( formerly Darth) Returns

Episode: Season 2 Episode 20: Twilight of the Apprentice Part 1

The Moment: Kanan, Ahsoka, and Ezra journey to Malachor to seek answers. Upon arrival at the ancient Sith planet, Ezra gets separated from the group. While lost in the underground temple, Ezra encounters an old man who seems to be stranded there. After a long conversation, the old man turns out to be the former Sith Lord Darth Maul. Now just called Maul, he uses Ezra’s goodness( which will end up being the main theme of other episodes) to achieve his own evil agendas.

Ezra attempts to teach Ezra some dark side lessons and even kill using anger when they encounter the Inquisitor the 7th Sister, but Ezra refuses. This meeting is just the first between the young Jedi learner and former Sith, which will continue throughout Rebels.

Why It’s Memorable: Maul is back! This Sith just won’t die. When Ezra finds him, he seems to be old and weak, but come on. Why would we trust Maul? I admit that I did and Filoni used Ezra as the point of view of the viewing audience. Brilliant.

Maul uses a line that is an homage to Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back, “I mean you no harm.” A genius way to make you think that Maul may be a trustworthy person now. But nope. Same old Maul. Well mostly. He now has finally adapted his old Master’s patience and wisdom, evolving into more of a master himself. But as we come to find out, Maul still didn’t learn the lesson of moving on and forgiving his enemy, which ultimately leads to his demise.
