23. Breaking in the rookies
Episode: Season 1 Episode 5: Rookies
"Episode Summary: Alone on a distant outpost, clone officers Rex and Cody must inspire their rookie unit to believe in themselves to stave off a droid commando invasion."
The Moment: Echo and Fives are granted medals of valor, then Rex rewards the duo with an induction into the 501st Legion, arguably the best squad of clones in the galaxy, after protecting the outpost located in the Rishi Moon territory.
Why It’s Memorable: What a proud moment, since we have seen this group go through many trials already in former story arcs and have been with them since the beginning, so to speak. It’s absolutely gut-wrenching when Hevy sacrifices his life to save his comrades, allowing them to carry on to live another day.
It’s always fun when Rex and Cody are together, who at this point are as tight of a duo as they come. I’ve always wanted a story post Order 66 with these two and we may get it in Rebels, with Cody being teased already in the show. I know that Rex would have a few choice words for Cody betraying Obi-Wan and the Republic that’s for sure. Please make it happen Filoni!
I also loved how the episode begins with the clones bored out of their minds on a remote location. Being former military myself, I can relate to this struggle. I also know that things can change from calm to chaotic in just the snap of a finger and this happens here!
