49. Anakin and Obi-Wan discover a large kyber Crystal on Utapau

Episode: Crystal Crisis On Utapau Story Reels: A Death on Utapau, In Search of the Crystal, Crystal Crisis, & The Big Bang

"Episode Summary:  Obi-Wan and Anakin investigate a mysterious death of a Jedi Master on Utapau, and uncover a secret Separatist weapons deal the likes of which they have never seen before. Obi-Wan and Anakin’s investigation on Utapau continues, and they allow themselves to be captured by weapons dealers who possess a focusing crystal of unspeakable power. Obi-Wan and Anakin must escape from Utapau with a kyber crystal before General Grievous and his droid army track them down. Obi-Wan and Anakin must do all they can to prevent a powerful weapon from falling into General Grievous’ hands."

The Moment: The two Jedi learn that Master Tu-Ahn has been murdered and then search for answers, discovering that the Jedi Master had been on the hunt for a massive kyber crystal, the same material used to power the lightsabers of Jedi (and Sith) alike. The two Jedi are successful in retrieving the massive kyber crystal but are still clueless about the true purpose of this unique crystal.

Why It’s Memorable: Kyber crystals! This episode reveals that the Death Star construction was well in motion and that it was, in-fact, a Republic weapon from the start. The power of the crystal was on display, showcasing the immense power this rare source contains. I can see now how the super-weapon of the Empire was so destructive.

Still dealing with Ahsoka leaving the Jedi Order, Anakin and Obi-Wan have a very deep conversation, revealing that Anakin still has not let go of losing his former apprentice. Anakin harshly criticizes Jedi leadership for not trusting Ahsoka, for neglecting in trying to prove her innocence, not standing by Ahsoka during her darkest hour as a Jedi Padawan. Kenobi does agree with Anakin, to a certain extent, that the Jedi Council did fall short in their handling of Ahsoka, but then states the choice was hers and hers alone.

The seeds of Darth Vader are firmly rooted in Anakin at this point and displayed throughout the entire story arc. Anakin is impatient and just flat out aggressive while trying to obtain information from the locals of Utapau. It’s ironic that the very reasons Anakin is furious, later turn him against the very person he vowed to protect when he later shows no mercy in his duel against his former learner.

In Rebels, Ahsoka sees Anakin in a Force vision and he asks her why she left him, proving that her absence played a large role in his turn to the Dark Side, later transforming him into the ruthless Darth Vader. Tears.
